Abrantes, Eduardo. 2010. Twice Johanne, Once Juliet – Kierkegaard, and the phenomena of aesthetical/ethical convergence in theatre performance. In Ethical Encounters: Boundaries of Theatre, Performance and Philosophy, ed. Daniel Meyer-Dinkgräfe and Daniel Watt, 163 - 173. ISBN: 1-4438-1695-7. Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK: Cambridge Scholars Publishing. The essays on dimensions of theatre ethics at the heart of contributions to this volume demonstrate how individual academics
and theatre artists have thought about the ethical implications of theatre, and present the concepts and paradigms that have
guided and influenced their thinking. They raise relevant issues and debate these in clearly defined, but not uniform ways—ways
that have helped them to come to terms with the issues they raise. The reader may agree or disagree with individual authors
or individual arguments. If such agreement or disagreement supports them to form and develop their own opinions and resultant
actions, this book has served its purpose.
This volume arises from the 2007 and 2008 TaPRA conferences and all of its essays, at one level or another, reflect upon what
is possible within the environment of theatre. Possibility is one form of ethical engagement with the boundaries of philosophy
and performance and reminds us of the inherently political aspect of any ethical question. So whilst the most obviously ethically
oriented papers appear towards the end of the volume, in a separate section, let us bear in mind that throughout certain limits
of representation will always be in question for any understanding of theatre.

Abrantes, Eduardo. Bounding and breaking — An inquiry on the voicing of acoustic territories,2nd International Congress on Ambiances,Montréal,2012 (Comunicação). The second International Congress on Ambiances is held under the aegis of the International Ambiances Network. The congress,
organized every four years, is one of the network’s main events, an international gathering for researchers, artists and players
engaged in analyzing the ambiance-related dimensions of the built environment and in the sensory construction of the contemporary
world.
Many approaches are at work in the field of architectural and urban ambiance, and these multiple contributions nurture its
rich diversity. The International Congress on Ambiances aims to give voice to this activity, feeding on work exploring new
forms of exchange between what is designed and what is experienced, between the measured and the qualified, the projected
and the tested, the material and the immaterial.
The Congress will be held for four days at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), in Montreal, from 19 to 22 September
2012. It will seek to express advances in learning and new hypotheses proposed by the various disciplines and fields of activity
which address the question of ambiances.

Wandering with Voices – a phenomenological inquiry on the vocal experience of everydayness,Tuned City Tallinn 2011: Conference "Sonorities of Place",Tallinn, Estónia,2011 (Conferência ou palestra). WANDERING WITH VOICES – A PHENOMENOLOGICAL INQUIRY ON THE VOCAL EXPERIENCE OF EVERYDAYNESS
lecture by Eduardo Abrantes
As sentient beings we are constantly immersed in a sonorous field. This field of sound is bound together with the objects,
presences, events that occur to us, in us, that define identity and territory, through embodiment and beyond – somewhere between
the intimate familiar other, and the strange foreign self. The uses of the voice are innumerable: you call, you are called,
you express, resonate, find yourself affected, react, and even that all pervading inner voice, sometimes too loud to handle,
rises, and so it goes…
From the philosophical perspective, the voice, when not completely converted into speech by speech, has been hard to deal
with. On the other hand, it has found itself at home in the contemporary interdisciplinary strategies of the Humanities. From
sound studies to urban design, from the performing to the visual/plastic arts, from politics to neuroscience – its numerous
revolving critical takes can leave one quite out of breath.
In his recent work, Abrantes investigates a crossover between “Extended Mind Theory” (Clark & Chalmers, 1998) and “sound envelopes”
or “sonorous skin ego” (Didier Anzieu, 1990), as a model for the notion of individuality in a surrounding world, where exchange
is the rule. In the lecture “Wandering with Voices – a phenomenological inquiry on the vocal experience of everydayness”,
Abrantes focuses on the potential of the actual voice in space and place, as a root of identity, consciousness and presence.

A phenomenological inquiry into the acoustic manifestation of presence
Eduardo Abrantes, PhD Candidate, New University of Lisbon and Center for Subjectivity Research, University of Copenhagen
What is a “sound object”? More acutely so, in what way does the adding of “sound” describe, question or challenge the notion
– the multiple notions, actually – of what an object is? Can a voice be an example of a sound object? If so, how to describe
it? And more importantly, what do we gain (and/or loose) in our understanding of what a voice is and means, if we experience
it as a
sound object? This cluster of questions departs from concerns taken up in my PhD research project, where I question the experience
of the voice as presence in the context of phenomenology of sound.
In other words, I start by supposing that the voice can be questioned from a philosophical perspective, as a worthy philosophical
“problem”. I assume also that this perspective, informed by phenomenology, should aim for an holistic description that does
not fall so easily into the trap of the traditional dual-divide of voice as speech – therefore, thought or meaningful language
– and voice as acoustic event – physical/physiological sonorous manifestation, or simply put, a sound. Lastly, this method
of questioning although departing from a philosophical background, is interdisciplinary both by nature and necessity, dealing
with artistic experimentation in the fields of sound art, performance and field recording.

Abrantes, Eduardo. Insignificant Voices - the Phenomenology of Vocal Improvisation and Meaninglessness,Sonorities - Festival of Contemporary Music - Two Thousand + Ten Symposium,Belfast,2010 (Comunicação). Title: Insignificant Voices – the phenomenology of vocal improvisation and meaninglessness
Author: Eduardo Abrantes | New University of Lisbon | Center for Subjectivity Research, University of Copenhagen
Abstract:
In 1843, while discussing Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” in his text “The Immediate Erotic Stages or the Musical-Erotic”, the Danish
philosopher Søren Kierkegaard [1813-1855] states that “music always expresses the immediate in its immediacy”.
Can this mysterious phrase be merely explained by the absence, at the time, of music recording techniques, meaning that music
could only be experienced when played live, therefore unmediated? Or is there a deeper meaning, something that reflects on
the very nature of the musical as a model for the experience of Time itself?
If one considers Kierkegaard’s sentence literally, music seems never to be more immediate as when it is improvised. But what
about vocal improvisation? Radical immediacy in vocal improvisation seems to rest in its ability to forego language altogether.
To vocalize without meaning, to remain in actuality by deriving its unpredictability from nonsense itself.
Examples abound: from the 9th century medieval Organum polyphonic choir to the 20th century scat singing in vocal jazz by
the likes of Cab Calloway, Anita O’Day or Mel Torme; from contemporaries such as Meredith Monk’s extended vocal performativity,
to Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser use of the thickness of accent and irregular metric in song, to the Icelandic Sigur Rós’
“hopelandic” harmonic gibberish.
Borrowing from, among others, the French philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch’s [1903-1985] contrasting notions of the unutterable
and the ineffable in music’s expressivity, this paper focuses on the phenomena of the improvised voice – its relation to language,
and its striving to transcend its boundaries, relating also dynamically with the experience of subjective temporal categories
– the here and now of the resonating voice.

Abrantes, Eduardo. The Task of Translating Experience – On the Phenomenological Viability of Documenting Embodiment,Embodiment, Intersubjectivity and Psychopathology - International Conference,Heidelberg,2010 (Poster). Embodiment, Intersubjectivity and Psychopathology
International Conference, University of Heidelberg 30 Sept.-2 Oct. 2010
During the last decade, the concept of embodiment has become a key paradigm of interdisciplinary approaches from the areas
of philosophy, psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience. The body is no longer merely considered as an interesting input for
the brain or mind. The new trend is to link embodiment, cognition and emotion in a deeper way, and this has particular repercussions
for understanding our social engagements. This in turn has implications for psychopathology and psychotherapy, because embodied
and intersubjective views on mental illness can offer new insights useful for diagnosis and remediation.
The conference is aimed at creating an interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of ideas on the themes of embodiment, intersubjectivity
and their role in psychopathology. It brings together worldwide experts from the fields of developmental psychology, philosophy,
and psychopathology, in order to advance on some key questions for this research area, among them:
What is embodied intersubjectivity? In how far is our relationships with others mediated by the body?
What is the role that embodied intersubjectivity plays for the development of social cognition?
How can mental illness be conceived from an embodied and enactive point of view?
What is the use of the notion of embodiment for therapy and training?
The conference is also intended to inaugurate the recently established Karl-Jaspers-Chair for Philosophical Foundations of
Psychiatry at the University of Heidelberg.
Main Speakers:

Before her first individual exhibition, a young artist unveils her drawings to her friend, the filmmaker. The work process,
her visual sensibility and the categories of drawing - line, stain and mark - are assembled cinematographically in a intuitive
manner. Her performative drawing, her theoretical stance, both are set in motion in a zoo - where uncanny and inspiring subjects
roam untamed.

Research Day on mobile sonic ambiances, taking place on 8th February 2011 at the Arkitekturmuseet of Stockholm.
Organization: Ricardo Atienza (Konstfack) & Damien Masson (Cresson).
As part of a collaboration between Cresson laboratory (CNRS, France) and Konstfack (Sweden), and within the framework of International
Ambiances Network, this one-day seminar addresses the interrelation between physical mobilities, sound environments and urban
ambiances.
Today, in a situation of "globalized mobility", we can go as far as to say that everyone, or at least every city-dweller,
is 'on the move', using all kinds of means (walking, bicycling, driving, ‘metro-ing’, ‘train-ing’, and so on). In the other
hand, this phenomenon makes the common urban space shifting from being considerable in terms of places to become remarkable
in terms of places of (or for) movement (Urry, 2007). Focusing on the sonic experience of mobility and on the sound qualities
of these new places of – and for – movement, this seminar brings together scientists (from differentiated fields: urban sociology,
urban studies, psychology, acoustics), engineers, architects, and artists in order to address problems related to:
- Sound-designing places of mobility beyond the unique issue of comfort,
- The controversies of adding sound in public space (of mobility),
- Understanding lived territories and practices from a sonic perspective.
Such questions intend to encourage original discussions situated at the intersection of two growing fields of research (sonic
studies, mobility studies). Therefore, this day aims much more at proposing new research perspectives (notably in terms of
objects and methods), than at delivering closed results of study.

Art and Identity - Challenging Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives, 2010 (Conferência). Nome do evento: Art and Identity - Challenging Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives; Nome da Instituição: Danish Society for Philosophy and Psychology; Cidade do evento: Copenhagen / Centre for Health and Society, University of Copenhagen. Art and Identity
Challenging Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives
May 7-8, 2010
Two-day symposium organized by the Danish Society for Philosophy and Psychology in collaboration with the Departments of Philosophy
and Psychology, University of Copenhagen.
This symposium focuses on art in relation to questions of identity and self-development, and includes art's implications for
philosophical and psychological traditions. Philosophy has often searched for the functions of art in rational and general
systems, while psychology, with its more empirical nature and much shorter history, holds out the possibility of creating
an aesthetics based upon actual, lived experience. Although many philosophers reject the reduction of art to its subjective
potential for experience, philosophical aesthetics contains several assumptions about the psyche, both in relation to psychic
structures as well as to psychic functions. Within scientific psychology, partly delimited as more of an empirical endeavor
than philosophy, aesthetic experience has been granted much lesser import and has comprised less of psychology's self-identity.
Accordingly, the central questions of this symposium are: How is art linked to identity and self-development, seen from philosophical
and psychological perspectives? What are the borders for these fields of inquiry when it comes to experiences with art? And
how can philosophy and psychology inform each other in this mutual quest for understanding the functions of art in relation
to questions of identity and self-development?
Speakers
Ciarán Benson (University College Dublin), Andrew Bowie (University of London), Gerald Cupchik (University of Toronto), Judy
Gammelgaard (University of Copenhagen), Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht (Stanford University), Mark Johnson (University of Oregon).

Anthony Steinbock: "Shame as Self-Revelation" , 2010 (Conferência). Nome do evento: Anthony Steinbock: "Shame as Self-Revelation"; Nome da Instituição: Center for Subjectivity Research; Cidade do evento: Copenhagen / University of Copenhagen. Anthony Steinbock: "Shame as Self-Revelation"
"I treat shame as a fundamental personal emotion. Specifically, I describe shame as a self-revelatory, disjunctive experience
as being exposed to another. I further characterize the temporality of shame as "presenting," and examine the negative valence
peculiar to this experience. After developing its religious, moral, and philosophical implications, I delineate various modalities
of shame."
Anthony Steinbock is a Professor of Philosophy at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, USA. His research interests
are primarily contemporary German and French philosophy, especially, phenomenology and its development in thinkers like Husserl,
Merleau-Ponty, Scheler, Heidegger, Levinas, Derrida, Marion, Waldenfels, and Lefort. Thematically, he is interested in the
intersection of phenomenology and social ontology, critical theory, and the philosophy of religion.
Time: 2010-03-22 13.15 to 15.00
Place: CFS, University of Copenhagen, lecture room 25-5-11, Njalsgade 140-142, 5th floor.
