Maria Isabel Veiga, PhD. holds a degree in Biotechnological Engineering taken at Instituto Politécnico de Bragança. In 2004 went to Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and concluded her PhD in Medical Sciences until 2011 contributing to the knowledge of the importance of transporter genes in the mechanism of drug resistance in the deadliest malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. In 2012 she went to Columbia University, New York to perform transfection-based methods to validate if hypothetical single nucleotide polymorphisms found are reliable molecular markers, important for early and accurate detection of resistance. At present she is working at ICVS with a program in understanding the molecular mechanisms that a pathogen developed to achieve drug resistance. She is mainly interested in two infectious diseases, Malaria and Tuberculosis of which she is now affiliated and working in straight team work with Karolinska Institute and Columbia University. M. Isabel Veiga has published 20 papers in peer reviewed journals and awarded this year with the ESCMID/FEMS Research Fellowship 2014.

SYNOPSIS: Maria Isabel Veiga, PhD.
holds a degree in Biotechnological Engineering taken at Instituto Politécnico de Bragança.
In 2004 went to Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and concluded her PhD in Medical Sciences until 2011 contributing to the knowledge of the importance of transporter genes in the mechanism of drug resistance in the deadliest malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum.
In 2012 she went to Columbia University, New York to perform transfection-based methods to validate if hypothetical single nucleotide polymorphisms found are reliable molecular markers, important for early and accurate detection of resistance.
At present she is working at ICVS with a program in understanding the molecular mechanisms that a pathogen developed to achieve drug resistance.
She is mainly interested in two infectious diseases, Malaria and Tuberculosis of which she is now affiliated and working in straight team work with Karolinska Institute and Columbia University.

Isabel Veiga has published 20 papers in peer reviewed journals and awarded this year with the ESCMID/FEMS Research Fellowship 2014.
