Gustavo Ribeiro da Costa Alves

Gustavo R. Alves graduated in 1991 and obtained an MSc and a PhD degree in Computers and Electrical Engineering in 1995 and 1999, respectively, from the University of Porto, Portugal. He is a professor at the Polytechnic of Porto - School of Engineering, since 1994. He has authored or co-authored +165 conference and journal papers with referee process, 3 book chapters, and co-edited a book, (with Javier Garcia-Zubia, University of Deusto, Spain), about "Using Remote Labs in Education". He has also been involved in +18 national & international research projects. His research interests include engineering education, remote experimentation, and design for debug & test. He served as program co-chair of the 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE2013), as general chair of the 11th Remote Engineering and Virtual Instrumentation (REV2014) conference, of the 3rd Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing Multiculturality (TEEM2015) conference, and also as a Program Committee member of several international conferences. Dr. Alves is currently Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies and has also served as guest editor for the international Journal of Online Engineering (iJOE), the international Journal of Engineering Pedagogy (iJEP), the IEEE Latin-American Learning Technologies Journal, and the European Journal of Engineering Education (EJEE).

This work reports the incorporation result of a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Program in the two-years master's degree in Instrumentation and Metrology Engineering (MEIM) held at the School of Engineering, Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP). The procedure developed to find internships in industrial companies and institutions, which have needs for engineers in the areas of instrumentation and metrology is displayed. The authors also present the information on the situation of students that, by the end of the first academic year, could get enrolled in the curricular unit Dissertation/Project/ Professional Training (opting either for a professional internship in a company or by a research project conducted in ISEP laboratories). In order to understand the benefits and impact of a WIL program, from a student perspective, students were asked to answer a questionnaire. Lastly, the results achieved during the study period are presented, including the student reported outcomes (from the questionnaire), as well as the informal feedback from students and companies' supervisors. The good results achieved, regarding the development of theoretical-practical competencies as well as generic or soft skills, during the master's, were also confirmed by the fact that students are hired by the companies to continue their work after the end of professional training.

This paper describes how a new Erasmus Plus project, PILAR, (Platform Integration of Laboratories based on the Architecture of visiR), is being developed and how the start-up of the partnership and the project is reinforcing the VISIR (Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality) network and the Special Interest Group of VISIR under the Global Online Laboratory Consortium (GOLC) of the International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE). The Spanish University for Distance Education (UNED) coordinates the project that aims to federate the existing (or new) VISIR systems in order to use the resources more effectively and in a more efficient way, making transparent to the final user the election of the shared resources.

Concepts of Control Systems are important as they are present in the operation of a broad set of systems in all engineering branches. Sustainability issues have led to an intensive use of these concepts on systems. However teaching / learning of Control Systems Engineering has always been a difficult subject not only for the underlying theoretical part, but also for the few examples that are traditionally possible to illustrate in laboratory classes. Shortcomings are revealed at a later time when students have to understand subjects that include stabilization mechanisms or even when they need to develop control solutions based on digital technology, such microcontrollers. The present work presents a circuit based on analog electronics that was designed to carry out local laboratory experiments. The circuit is designed to create evidence for the student and allows the comparison of the values obtained experimentally with those expected theoretically. The requirements were included in the project to allow experiments to be performed remotely when integrated into an appropriate platform.

The study of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) has, since 1990 [1] [2] presented greater evolution. However, due to costs of measuring equipment for measuring the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) generated and propagated from equipment under test (EUT), a number of educational institutions cannot ou have difficult in teaching the phenomena associated to EMI generation, propagation and mitigation. Therefore, in last years, teachers of the EMC subject in Electronic Engineering and Technology in Electronic Systems courses of the Department of Electronics of the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina have developed experiments that allow the study of EMC/EMI using simulator software packages and usual bench equipment as oscilloscopes and signal generators. This work intend to present practical experiments that enable to the undergraduate students the observation of concepts and techniques associated to EMC and EMI, without concerns with a controlled environment, neither with the precision at the measuring of the induced voltage levels. The aim is to present the qualitative aspect and compare the results for certain situations.

This work reports the application of learning objects (LOs) for Electronics teaching, specially for themes that students struggle to grasp understanding. Two themes for Electrical and Electronics Engineering are illustrated here: equipment insulation and grounding, and the relationship between nonlinear loads and harmonic distortion. Using different learning objects, students were requested to answer some questions in a survey. Initial results presented in this work indicate that learning objects can help students to understand demanding technical themes.

The present study reports findings on students' perceptions in Electrical/Electronic Engineering courses from four higher education institutions: two Portuguese and two Brazilian. This study was based on a questionnaire previously validated that contains two main parts: student characterization and a list of forty-four items, divided in six groups (Teacher Involvement Perception, Student Interest, Student-Teacher Interaction, Course Organization and Functioning, Infrastructures and Overall Satisfaction). Students classified each item in accordance with their level of agreement (1, Strongly Disagree, to 5, Strongly Agree). The main goal of the research was to look for the evolution of a set of these items along the first three curricular years and assess similarities and differences among courses and higher education institutions considered. The set of items was chosen in a way to achieve a better understanding of how the flow of knowledge in these courses is perceived in apparently different realities. The results show that, in general, students do not understand the flow of knowledge along the first three years of study. Despite the differences observed among the four higher education institutions, those differences do not lead to different realities between the two countries.

The learning of Physics involves building up and using lab experiments. In turn, teachers must be trained in experimenting and using several resources that enable them to design valuable teaching strategies and learning activities. Thanks to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), virtual and remote labs can provide a framework where physical experiments can be developed. Altough remote labs have been in use for over a decade now in several countries and levels of education, its use at secondary schools in Latin America has not been reported yet. The Virtual Instruments System in Reality (VISIR) is one of these remote labs, suitable to practice in the area of electrical circuits. This paper aims at describing how this remote lab was used in a training workshop for secondary school level teachers of Physics in Costa Rica.

Experimentation is crucial in science teaching at any education level. Students' motivation and collaborative work are also essential in order to achieve positive learning outcomes. This article portrays the implementation of remote experimentation using VISIR in a Physics subject at high-school level. Qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed for this particular case study in order to shed light on the influence of VISIR on students' motivation. Results showed that VISIR remote lab is a powerful tool to arouse interest in electronic circuit topics.

The long-term goal of engineering education is to prepare students to work as engineers. Being a practical profession, laboratories play a crucial role in illustrating concepts and principles as well as improving technical skills. In the last decades the use of online resources (simulators and remote labs) has been growing, either as a complementary and/or as an alternative way of developing experimental competences. In the scope of the VISIR+ Project, this work presents the first results of a didactical implementation using simultaneously the remote laboratory VISIR (Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality), simulation and calculus in a Math Course at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). The preliminary results indicate that the use of several resources increases students' performance, boosting their learning and competence development.

In electrical engineering, sensing natural phenomena requires the use of transducers, such as the sensors named Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs). They are traditionally interfaced with computer devices through signal conditioning circuits to measure linear displacements with good linearity, sensitivity and precision. Their adoption in many industrial applications requires from engineering schools a particular attention to create the best conditions to teach and learn them, in particular by providing infrastructures to enable students the conduction of experimental activities. To overcome some of the difficulties faced by engineering schools (low budget, curricula time constraints, lack of infrastructures, among others), this paper presents a remotely accessible infrastructure comprising a customizable platform that enables the conduction of real LVDT experiments. Since the infrastructure is currently a prototype solution, some improvements are suggested, in particular the possibility of using some of the issues described in the IEEE1451.0 Std. that was originally published to design and interface smart transducers.

Experimental activities with real components are an essential part of all courses including or devoted to electrical and electronic circuits theory and practice. The knowledge triangle composed of hand-written exercises, simulations and traditional lab experiments has been enriched with the possibility for students to conduct real experiments over the Internet, using remote labs. This tutorial is devoted to one such remote lab named Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality (VISIR). The Global Online Laboratory Consortium (GOLC) elected VISIR as the best remote controlled laboratory in the world, at the first time this distinction was awarded. At the end of this tutorial, attendees are expected to know what is VISIR, what can (not) be done with it, who is currently using it, and how can one integrate it in a given course curriculum.

The practice and the hands-on are essential for technical and professionals skills, even in controlled situations. Due to that, the use of laboratories during the learning process is fundamental, although it has been more difficult to support such kind of infrastructure locally, which brings the challenge to find alternatives. On the other hand, the Brazilian law establishes that higher education institutions can offer a complete curricula or a part of the curricula by using E-learning, what builds a scenario to use remote laboratories. This work presents the alternatives for the use of remote laboratories, showing that this idea can be spread and applied in different technical areas allowing students and professors to accomplish experiments in a safe and flexible environment trough the internet in real remote laboratories. This work also shows preliminary discussions of a first experiment with technical high school students using remote laboratories.
